The best card games for 3 players

Three is an awkward number for cards. Partnership games like Spades and Euchre need four, many classics are written for two, and a 52-card deck doesn't split evenly three ways. The good news is that plenty of games either were designed for three or need only one small tweak — usually taking a card out, or dealing a few spare cards to one side.

Classics that adapt easily
- Hearts (three-handed) — remove the 2 of diamonds so the 51 remaining cards deal out 17 each. The player holding the 2 of clubs still leads the first trick. Everything else is unchanged: avoid hearts and the queen of spades, and try to shoot the moon when your hand allows it.
- Cribbage (three-handed) — deal 5 cards each and 1 card straight into the crib; each player then discards one card to the crib, so everyone holds four. Each player has their own peg track; the first to 121 wins.
- Rummy — deal 7 cards each with three players. Draw from the stock or the discard pile, meld sets and runs, and discard. Three is often considered the best number for Rummy: enough discards to fight over, not so many that the pile gets stale.
- Crazy Eights — many families deal 5 cards each with three players, though 7 works fine for a longer round. With three, it's easier to track who is short of a suit, which makes changing suit with an 8 much more tactical.
Games built for three
- Skat — Germany's national card game is designed for exactly three players: 32 cards (7 through ace), 10 each and 2 set aside as the 'skat'. After an auction, one player takes on the other two. Deep, and well worth learning.
- Three-handed Pinochle — using a 48-card pinochle deck, deal 15 cards each with 3 in a 'widow'. The high bidder takes the widow, names trump and tries to make their bid against the other two.
- Oh Hell — works for 3 to 7, but three is one of the best counts: the hand size climbs each round, everyone bids the exact number of tricks they'll take, and there are no partners to blame.
Quick and social
- President — shed cards by beating the last play with a higher single, pair or triple. With three there's a President, a middle player and a last-placed player who swaps their best card for the President's worst.
- Cheat — deal the whole deck, play cards face down and name them. Call 'cheat' if you think someone's lying. With three, you remember more of what's gone, so bluffing is harder.
- Go Fish — for three players with kids, deal 7 each and play as normal.
Why three players change the game
- Two against one: in most games the two trailing players quietly gang up on the leader. Play for second place until the last round.
- Turn order matters more: you always play after one player and before the other, so watch your left-hand neighbour's hand size more closely.
- Reverse cards matter again: in colour-matching games a reverse is just a skip with two players, but with three it changes who you're feeding cards to.
- Uneven decks: when a deck doesn't divide by three, remove a low card (as in Hearts) or deal the spares to a kitty.
