Stacking rules: can you stack +2 and +4 cards?

Stacking is the most argued-about rule in colour-matching card games. When someone plays a +2 on you, can you answer with your own +2 and send four cards to the next player? And can a +4 go on top of a +2?
The short answer: in the printed rules of most store-bought games, no — you draw and lose your turn. But stacking is the most popular house rule in the world, and Prism Riot builds it in so the argument is settled before the game starts.
Stacking in Prism Riot
- +2 on +2 is always allowed when stacking is on (the default in almost every mode).
- +4 on +4 is allowed.
- +4 on +2 (cross-stacking) is allowed only in Mayhem, the Merciless modes, Total Chaos, Mirrorlord and any Riot Lab table with cross-stacking switched on.
- +2 on +4 is never allowed — you can't make a pile smaller.
- The pile keeps growing until a player can't (or won't) stack. That player draws the whole pile and loses the turn.
- A SHIELD in front of you blocks the entire pile, however big it has grown.
How the pile moves
Imagine four players. You play +2. The next player stacks a +2 (pile: 4). The third stacks a +4 at a cross-stacking table (pile: 8). The fourth has nothing and draws eight. Play then continues with the player after them. In Prism Riot the pending pile shows as a red badge on the discard pile, so everyone sees what's coming.
When stacking is off
In Prism Riot's Riot Lab you can switch stacking off. Then any draw card lands directly: the next player draws and play continues. Tables without stacking are slower and less swingy — good for younger players.
Defending against a stack
- Keep one draw card in reserve when a rival is low on cards — it's your answer to their attack.
- Play a SHIELD early when your hand is big; it waits in front of you until an attack arrives.
- In Merciless, a +10 on a big hand can knock you out (25-card mercy rule). Keep PURGE and FREEZE ALL for escapes.
- Remember direction: a FLIP or REV +4 can send the pile back where it came from.
Frequently asked questions
Can you stack a +4 on a +2?
Only with cross-stacking. In Prism Riot that's Mayhem, the Merciless modes and Total Chaos — or your own Riot Lab table.
Can you stack a +2 on a +4?
No. A smaller draw can't answer a bigger one in any Prism Riot mode.
Is stacking in the official rules of store-bought games?

Does a shield block a stacked pile?
