Fun house rules for colour-matching card games
Updated September 25, 2026
Every family has house rules. Some make games faster, some make them meaner, and some start arguments. Here are the most popular — and the ones worth trying — with a note on how each changes the game.
All of them are built into Prism Riot. Use Riot Lab to combine them and share your house rules as a link.
Rules that speed the game up
- Doubles: play every card of the same number at once.
- Jump-In: identical cards can be played out of turn.
- Micro hands: deal four cards instead of seven (Micro Riot).
- Turn timer: 5–10 seconds per turn (Blitz).
- Anything Goes: every card plays on every card.
Rules that make it meaner
- Stacking draw cards (+2 on +2).
- Cross-stacking (+4 on +2).
- 7-0: swap hands on a 7, rotate on a 0.
- No mercy: +6, +10 and a 25-card knockout rule.
- No shields: every attack lands (Shieldless).
Rules that change the feel
- Draw until you can play (Draw Hunt).
- Last Card Call with a two-card penalty.
- Teams of two — sit opposite your partner (Tag Team).
- Double wilds (Wild Storm).
- No wild cards at all (Pure Colors).
- Elimination rounds (Last Prism Standing).
- Big hands of ten (Big Deal).
- The dark side (Eclipse).
- The random launcher (Eruption).
- Points race to 500 (Prism Marathon).
