What happens when you can't play a card?

Updated September 25, 2026

Sooner or later every player gets stuck: nothing in hand matches the energy or the symbol. What happens next depends on the rules you play — and it changes the pace of the whole game.

Draw one and pass (Prism Riot default)

Draw one card and your turn ends. It's the fastest rule and keeps hands from ballooning. In Prism Riot your drawn card is available on your next turn.

Draw until you can play

Keep drawing until a playable card turns up, then play it. Prism Riot caps this at eight cards so a turn can't last forever. Draw Hunt, Mayhem and Purge Party use it; it makes hands bigger and rounds longer.

Eruption

In the Eruption modes you don't draw one card — the pile erupts 0 to 4 random cards and your turn passes.

Choosing to draw

You can always draw instead of playing, even with a playable card. It's sometimes right: hold an energy you'll need later, or keep a draw card to answer an attack.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to play a card if you can?

Can you play the card you just drew?

With draw-until-playable, yes — your turn continues. With draw-one, your turn ends.

The discard pile (except the top card) is shuffled into a new draw pile.
