Flip card game rules: light side and dark side

Updated September 25, 2026

Flip-style card games give every card two faces. At some point a special card flips the whole table — the discard pile, the draw pile and every hand — to the other side, where the cards are nastier.

Prism Riot's Eclipse pack is an original twist on the idea. Instead of printing two decks, each action card has a dark twin: when someone plays ECLIPSE, the whole table goes dark and every action plays as its twin until the next ECLIPSE.

The dark twins

  • FREEZE → FREEZE ALL: everyone else loses a turn and you play again.
  • +2 → +5: the next player draws five.
  • +4 → ROULETTE: pick an energy; the next player draws until they find it.
  • SWAP → PURGE: discard every card of that energy from your hand.
  • Numbers, FLIP, SHIELD and PRISM stay the same.

How the flip works

Play an ECLIPSE (it matches like any energy card) and the table flips — the Prism Riot table glows violet and your cards show their dark faces with a 🌑 badge. Legality uses the effective face, so on the dark side a +5 matches a +5, not a +2. Play another ECLIPSE to flip back.

Strategy

  • Before flipping, look at your actions: if they get stronger on the dark side, flip; if a rival's likely +2s become +5s aimed at you, don't.
  • Flip with a small hand — the dark side's FREEZE ALL and PURGE finish rounds fast.
  • Umbra, the Eclipse boss, plays best in the dark. Flip back to fight her.

Frequently asked questions
